About East Wind Games

East Wind Games is a labour of love. My entire life I have found games and game mechanics to be enthralling. I started in the traditional manner playing “Cowboys & Indians” or “Kick the Can” and “Hide-and-go-Seek” like every other child. But, my attention turned to the table games. It wasn’t long before I was sitting on my Da’s knee watching he & my Mum play Pinochle and other card games, or Dominoes or (later) Mah Johngg. My fascination was cemented and I took my turn in the Pinochle, Dominoes and Mah Johngg games. This led me to an early 1970s game called Chainmail and Sorcery that soon became known the world over as Dungeons & Dragons. I played that up through my late 20s and still own every source & rule book I’ve ever purchased or been given. In addition to Dungeons & Dragons, I branched into other Role Playing Games (RPGs) and it took over my life. It took over my life so completely that I got a job at a Comic Book & Game store so that I could more readily afford my habit. That job led to another job where I became the Game Buyer & General Manager of a rival comic book store chain. It was kismet. It was there that I met & married Marita Beth who encouraged my game buying & playing and truly is the insipiration for East Wind Games in its current incarnation. We established East Wind Games as an Historical Game Company meaning that we intended to create & carry games that played a prominant part in long-ago history or were based solidly in that history. We envisioned carrying the Tables games (Backgammon, Senet, UR, etc.), the chase games (Pacheesi, The Game of Goose, etc.), the Merrels games (Nine Men’s Morris, Captain’s Mistress, etc.), the chess games (Chess, Draughts, Chaturanga, etc.) and others (games of skill, games of chance, games of strategy, cards, dice, etc.) that fit within the historical “box” that we had established. We soon found, to our dismay but not necessarily to our surprise, that that is a very narrow niche and financial success was going to be hard won. So, we decided to expand our offerings to include a select array of games that we believe have excellent mechanics, offer high replayability value and are beautiful in appearance (such as Cathedral, Pylos, Quarto, etc.). We believe that we have a diverse enough range of games to appease the “modern” player as well as the “historical” gamer. This blog (blog.eastwindgames.com) will attempt to keep both sets of customers and fans informed & appeased.

Cheers.
